Before you sign with any roofer
Texas doesn't license roofers at the state level, so a few checks go a long way. These come straight from Texas law and Texas Department of Insurance guidance.
- Ask for proof of insurance. Texas doesn't issue a statewide roofing license, so request certificates for general liability and workers' compensation (or the company's equivalent coverage) before work starts.
- Get the estimate in writing — scope of work, materials (brand and product line), tear-off, decking replacement terms, cleanup, start date and payment schedule.
- Never let a contractor waive or "absorb" your deductible. Texas law prohibits it, and insurance-paid contracts of $1,000 or more must include a notice saying so.
- A roofer can't negotiate your claim for you. Texas law bars contractors from acting as public adjusters on property they work on.
- Ask who pulls the permit if one is required where you live, and who handles HOA approval.
- Get both warranties in writing: the manufacturer's product warranty and the roofer's workmanship warranty.
The full list is in how to hire a roofer in Texas, and claim rules are in our Texas roof insurance claim guide.

Katy roofing FAQ
Is katytxroofers.us a roofing company?
No. We're a free referral service. When you call, we connect you with an independent roofing company that serves your area. That company — not us — inspects, quotes and does the work, and it pays us for the referral. See how this site works.
Does it cost anything to call?
We don't charge homeowners anything. Ask the roofer you're connected with whether there's any charge for an inspection or estimate before they visit.
Which areas do you cover?
Katy ZIP codes 77449, 77450, 77491, 77492, 77493 and 77494, plus nearby communities such as Fulshear, Brookshire, Simonton, Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Cypress, Hockley, Waller and Sealy. Coverage changes, so check your ZIP code.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Katy?
It depends on where the home is. Many Katy addresses are outside city limits, in unincorporated Harris, Fort Bend or Waller County. If you're inside City of Katy limits, check with the City of Katy permit office, and ask your roofer who will pull any permit that's needed.
Can a roofer pay my insurance deductible?
No. Texas law prohibits contractors from waiving, rebating or absorbing a policyholder's deductible. Treat any offer to do so as a red flag. Read our Texas roof claim guide.
